Role of Materiality today

In the literal sense of word , materiality is the concept of or applied use of various materials or substances in the medium of building . It comes in shape and form or even the color of the texture . For example , the striation of the materials that can be touched by hand or differentiated by its textures such as wood compared with stone . Conventionally , the materiality of architecture exists in the collective effect of the visual , formal , acoustic and tactile qualities of the built materials under certain conditions of light , situation and time .

Nowadays , materiality in architecture has been enhanced due to the improvement in development of materials . Materials can be performed in many ways as how the materials been jointed in physical or aesthetic purpose .

Case study

Kontum Indochine Cafe ( 2013 ) - Vo Trong Nghia

"The challenge of the project is to respect the nature of bamboo as a material and to create a distinctive space unique to bamboo," say the architects.

Referencing the shapes of typical Vietnamese fishing baskets, the top-heavy bamboo structures form a grid between the tables of the open-air dining room, which functions as the restaurant and banqueting hall for the Kontum Indochine Hotel. It shows the aesthetic vision of the bamboo and the texture of the bamboo reacts to the materiality of architecture .

Role of Immateriality today

" Focusing on immaterial architecture as the perceived absence of matter more than the actual absence of matter " mentioned by Jonathan Hill in the article , immateriality is more into the realm of ideas or a formless phenomenon . The way to differentiate immateriality and materiality is " Immaterial is an idea where material is an object " . In other word , immaterial architecture is more a state of mind than a tectonic quality . For example , " Feng Shui " used in Chinese architecture or " Vastu Purusha Mandala " used in Indian architecture .

On 21st century , immateriality architecture can be performed in various ways . Abstracting the idea or the concept of the building form ( wavy form inspired by sea wave ) and injecting the natural elements into the building ( light or ventilation ) .

Case study

Museum of Wood ( 1994 ) - Tadao Ando

The form of Museum of Wood is inspired by the shape of the sawn hollow tree trunk . It is built to celebrate the day of the forests after the destruction of large forest areas during the Second World War .
The central crater of 20 m in diameter , encouraged by the joyful sound of water flowing from many sources on a sprinkling of stone , was designed as an artificial source , where the sky and water are metaphorical . The texture of the bamboo representing the forest , the bridge representing the land and the water representing the sea .

Beyond mere symbolism formal Ando uses the complicated structure of the ceiling to give the interior an interesting play of light and shadow . The light helps to foster that sense of solemnity and respect that inspires a sanctuary .

For my opinion , in terms of the expression of material properties and the transformation of materials , materiality plays an important role . It reflects the effects which decided by the designers by using the characteristic of materials as how it reacted to the five senses of architecture . Immateriality is more toward the human perception as how the building speaks and transfers the idea or concept of the designer by leading the visitors to feel what they suppose to be felt . Both of them consists of value judgement judging by different people on how they maximize their initial or capital values .
