3. Regarding concepts of materiality and immateriality, discuss one major Difference & Primary Commonality regarding Alberti’s, Pallasmaa’s and Hill’s texts. (Ng Shi Qi 1001542350)

The difference from the article of Juhani Pallasmaa is immaterial is to create an illusion as he knew how important the visual to the design. A building has become an image product to him. Because there's an architecture which targets for striking, unforgetful and impact to the viewer. People judging the building by their eyes instead of understanding it.

In contrast, from Jonathan Hill's article, he believes materiality and immateriality shall not be opposite they are in conjunction. They shall be merging together. As he said the immateriality is more mystery, attractive and challenging to an architect. He also described materiality as an architecture that is evenmore safe. To him, a building doesn't matter materiality or immateriality by him but users. An architect has to design a condition which that decision can be made which means a building which merges the materiality and immateriality together and the user to decide which one is them instead by us.

The primary commonality of materiality and immateriality is they appreciate the raw material as it shows the essence of age. From Leon Battista Alberti's article, he keeps talking about the quality of the materials and the installation of them. He fully shows his understanding of the material as Louis Kahn said: "When you are designing in brick, you must ask brick what it wants or what it can do." Juhani Pallasmaa likes materiality because it shows the essence of age while those plastic and steel material which made by machine didn't show it.
