MATERIALITY & IMATERIALITY Q4. -- Yap Jia Cherng 1001642857

4. For each of the texts, discuss a major issue with which you most agree and most disagree; reflect upon why you hold these views.

I disagree with  JUHANI PALLASMAA, that he stated that machine made materials of today does not show the essense of age, and do not incorporate with the dimension of time.

In my opinion, materials will keep on changing and innovating along the timeline, each of the material existing at the specific point of timeline shows the dimension of the time, and how the material cope with the dimension is the method of uisng it. In the text he stated natural materials such as timber, bricks, stones expresses the age and history, as well as the story of their origins and their history of human use. I do agree with the facts, but this does not means that synthetic plastic, glass and enamelled metals does not do the same thing. The age and history, origins, human use is showed by how a material is being use by human and how it reacts with the nature, the surroundings and what happen to that material. It does not have to be a natural material to show these kind of things, but any of the material can do that. Nowadays we have lots of glass arts, glass architecture, amazing steel structure and fantastic plastic work. Does these not show which dimension of time we are in in the present? These ideas and innovation will go on and create another human history and human use of glass, steel and also plastics, and these is a part of the essense of time of our age.

I agree with JONATHAN HILL, that he state that he advocate an architecture that embraces the immaterial and the material.

Architecture should have no boundaries of thoughts between material and immaterial. Even human itselves consits of material, which is the machanism of the body, and immaterial, which is the thoughts, personality and mentals. Each of the sides need another side to exist and the combination make a human whole. I belief architecture is the same, the material and immaterial compliment each other to make the architecture whole. Material may show their function in structural or practical, and immaterial comes in with the openings, or the devices that allow them to cope with the structure, to bring out feelings towards the building, senses, with touch, smell, hear, sight, taste. Material is somthing that physically create the space, but the soul of it may need the help of immaterial. It is like the structure of a room is its material, but the amountt of light that is allowed to pass through defines the expression of the space.
