TALK BY JAMES LIM

Mr James Lim is an architect and a lecturer in UCSI University . He had his past experience in two companies ZLG companies and RSP architects . Mr James was invited to give a talk about his past works while working in those two companies . In his talk , he talk about how he fully use the environmental nature advantages and make it part of the design . The first building he mentioned is the Point 92 buiding which is located at Petaling Jaya finished in year 2012 .

The basic introduction for this building is that , the building consist of two part :
1. Parking - The bottom
2 . Office  - The irregular shape

He like the shape of the building turn out to be irregular and the facade are very "out of the norm"  which Mr James said this : "reduces the boredom from the basic structure of building" which in a way i like how the building 's opening are very randomly placed observed from the outside but it has the reasonable logic to be that way .

The opening is connected from floor to floors . One of the connected area n exposed to the sunlight , according to Mr James is the cafeteria of the office which i feel it serve a very good purpose to be there for the worker to enjoy during breaktime while enjoying the view due to its exposure to outside .

When he is designing , he consider the material used to create the harmonious atmosphere in these particular open area The lobby which located between the irregular shape and the parking lots is filled with trees and also the material used is suitable and conjuction to one another . The tree planted not only become harmonious , but it also masked the column which support the upper part of the building - irregular shape . He mentioned about the second projects which is inspired by the Point 92 which also has the randomness and add a new feature which the building is floating going by the name of Onyx building .

Before
Other than high rise building , he also designed cafes in Kuala Lumpur areas . He mentioned about how he design a cafe with the use of materials  , which each of them brings different feels to the cafe . One of it is he renovated a cafe counter from a very dull appearance to a better and enlighten the atmosphere .

He mentioned about the hanging lamps is handmade by him . Each of them hanged in the cafe . Mr James likes that when handmade a thing always carries a randomness and surprise on the outcome of the object which very different from what he planned it to be .

After
Overall , I enjoyed Mr James talk on how he made full use of nature blend in with the manmade building which gives a different feel for the user to appreciate . I loved how he able to produces the uncommon openings to a building which is randomly placed but a logic reason behind it . Given the technology nowadays advanced , Mr James rather make the lamps itself , as it can be very satisfying because it is handmade by yourself .

Q&A session

Novi           : From all of the design, is there any issue with the end user feedback?

Mr.James  : There is feedback received like it's too iconic even though it's not on a big scale, but mostly, the main point of the feedback from the end user is that they liked it and enjoy using the space.

Pang Shi Han : Comparing Malaysia and Singapore, do you think Singapore is a better platform for architects to explore and be given more opportunities in terms of exposure and experiences?

Mr.James        : Yes, as Singapore is a small country, it becomes a design hub where architects from Singapore will receive various projects from other countries around south east Asia. The architect will be given more exposure toward international projects and be able to work with people from all around the world.

Yap Yen Ling  : In your opinion, do you think the architect still following the theories of architecture in terms of designing rather than just follow the clients’ needs?

Mr.James        : Of course, we still follow those theories somehow but when architects design also need to refer back to the client's requirement and as I mentioned just now the project Point 92, we do pursuit and try to educate them with our typology and design sense. If you talk about theories in term of philosophy kind I think this seldom happens in Malaysia and it is too individualism to practice in Malaysia too.

Logeish     : Your (Mr. James) designs speaks a lot about random openings and allow natural phenomenon penetrate thru building. What if the client likes the idea, but with neat and less opening on the facade?

Mr.James  : Convincing the client is hard but work smart with what you can substitute with clients needs with a proposed cost.

In nutshell , I think Mr James is a bold person in term of designing , which he is brave enough to try something new given the circumstances nowadays the building structure built look the same to each other , but he would try something new to outbreak this common mindset .
