Sharing experience from EKAR architecture( Ng Shi Qi 1001542350)

A short and simple introduction for the architect., Mr. Ekaphap Duangkaew. He is the founder of Ekar and co-founder of NOTDS( North of Thailand Design Studio). He graduated in Architecture Course from Chiang Mai University. We are pleased to attend his talk' The Other's Place.'

How to bring in the life into the box which is working and life.

One of his projects is T-house in Tha Sai.
It is an old house which transforms into a new life. Now it is an office, a warehouse even a residence for family expansion. The main function of T-house is for the owner family business which is cloth wholesaler. They maintain the residence, small garment storage and added in the new office and prepare an area for a further phase of the family extension to maintain the circulations and routine of the old house.

The overall design is a combination of Thai living habit and Western ideal. A mixture of Tropical Architecture with Modernity which leads to a simple- formed structure. They using cloth line as the main idea so it is designed to be simple and monochrome which is white, grey and black. Because of the holding, a belief which the underwear needed to be shown focusing on its cutting and fabric more than its striking patterns. The idea of minimalism.

Two crossing staircases functioning to connect all rooms.

Three small overhead skylight on the rooftop which limits the amount of light accessing into the house yet energy saving.

Different level of opening according to the leveling inside the building.

Daylight concept.

Next project will be' Multi-place'.
A concrete block Thai house for vet and pharmacist sibling. It is surrounded by shophouses as it is in chaotic and noisy. Using back the original building purpose which is shophouse. The bottom part will be shoplot while the top part of the house will be living area. By this, it causes the different leveling which allows the sunlight to penetrate. They were thinking about how to make a pollution, noisy and messy to be a home.

They have to full fill the different requirement for two very different job which is pet clinic and pharmacy. On the left side will be pet shop while the right will be the cafe and the pharmacy. They use a narrow green area in between to create boundary yet juxtaposition. For the living quality, they designed the sleeping area on the upper floor as they don't need any view but without the noise.

The sunscreen on facade allows limited sunlight to penetrate into the space.

If you wanna build a building in a messy surrounding, it has to be clean, neat and tidy.( Hierarchy)

Development and model.

Thirdly, ReGen House
A family must live together. A site which mixed of traditional and modern. This building is using different material and texture which related to the site context. Not only this, it relates to the relationship between the family. As he explained the form of the building is like the father has to take care of the son and the son has to take care of the daughter. It shows a close relationship between each other. And each box is for a family.

The last project he shared is about the temple.

The temple has a lot of visitor during the festival. To solve the issue of this issue, they designed around 80 toilets. The toilets are surrounded by nature. The most interesting part is due to the low maintenance of the toilet, they create the water feature below the basin area.By this, the water will flow to the water feature while the eel will cleaning the water and lastly it will purify by the tree. This idea successfully solving the problem using nature ecosystem.
