Proportion x Organization ------ Yan Chyuan Kai

I believe when we speak about Architecture , we often come across the term of :

 P R O P O R T I O N    V S    O R G A N I Z A T I O N

Over the centuries , this two terms have already become the basic fundamental to consider when designing a specific building . But , what do we really know about the true content that defines its word ; organization and proportion ? Did we really figure out out the meaning that we would want it to be applied into design ?

Organization .... ?

Organization , in architecture term is to determine how spaces can be linked or to be separated to create the best resolution for the user . In a way , it enable us to define the connection of the spaces not only that are side-by-side , but also overall as an unification . For instance , why is the living room is placed right at the entrance of the house ? Why not we step into our kitchen first when we enter the house ?  It plays a role in architecture .

Proportion ... ?

Proportion is a central principle of architectural theory and an important connection between mathematics and art. It is the visual effect of the relationships of the various objects and spaces that make up a structure to one another and to the whole.

In other words , i believe it controls the volume , the dimension of a space to create an aesthetic environment . The proportion of a space can dramatically change how a user feels in it . For example , a space built for art display , the sensation that user may feel in this two condition may be different .Both will give a totally different feeling towards the user .
          a. a space with a double volume
          b. a space with a single volume

In today's architecture , organization and proportion coexisted to enhance design . They increase the visual effect outcome , creating a harmonious atmosphere in architecture designing . One cannot exist without another , together they form a better functional situation within a space .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Riverside Clubhouse
       Tao Architect

The Riverside Clubhouse designed by HUA Li from TAO Trace Architecture Office . The clubhouse is well designed using the proportion and the organization as the fundamental consideration when designing . For the playhouse , it only give one main entrance into the spaces , which in a way it separates spaces that are private spaces and also public space with different function .

Having the organization as the fundamental when you designing , instantly we are able to locate the strongest connectivity and the weak connectivity between spaces . For example , for the Riverside Clubhouse , he place the gallery display(yellow) right next to the lobby(blue dot) , which accessible for public uses . How about the red one ? ..

The red one is the private uses , which only for the customer that booked the place . We don't see the toilet are adjacent to the lobby , we don't see the storage is adjacent to the lobby , we don't place the bedroom right next to the lobby . They all have the reason for it because of the lowest connection between spaces .

Other than that , Proportion are also the important consideration in designing . In which , The Riverside Clubhouse created. a lot of space which is double volume according to the function of the spaces . The Riverside Clubhouse are created mostly for event purposes , mainly party . If we were to have party , we wouldn't want to party in a miniature space .

Le Corbusier once said : "proportion provokes sensation. The volume of a space , give a totally different feeling to the user , a different sensation .

In the nutshell , proportion and organization are essential part in designing stage , which we always neglect the importance in it .
