Proportion and Organization (Ng Shi Qi 1001542350)

We always connect proportion and organization with architecture today as they form an interesting, impressive space in the building. Yet, what are we searching for in a space? Dimension or sensation?

Proportion determine the height the volume of a space. Le Corbusier said proportion provoke the sensation. How does a proportion provide a feeling to the user? A different height of space does provide different kind of sensation. For an example, when u walking through a narrow space such as corridor u feel depressed. A lot of designers apply double volume on their project but why because everyone is using it? No. With the double volume height, the space quality improves as the ceiling is taller and it  looks wider. By this, the space is providing a totally different sensation as grandeur, elegant, comfort etc.

Organization is how the space link together. It is the totality of the space. Organization interaction the space. It plays with the arrangement of the space. There are few spatial organizations we always see around which are space within a space, interlocking space, adjacent space, spaces linked by a common space. By applying different kind of spatial organization, the effect of the space will be different as well.

Let's take a look at the case study. I found a building which is interesting in proportion and organization. Zeitz MOCAA Art Gallery by Heatherwick. It is the biggest art museum in South Africa which it is hollowing out the inside of a historical grain silo building.

Inside the art museum, they craved a huge void out of the building's tubular interior to create a network of 80 gallery spaces. The void started from the lower ground floor till level 5. By the height of the void, it provides a huge impact and larger space proportion to the visitors as the sensation of the space is totally different than other space in the building.

The designer applied transparent material on top on the void to allow the sunlight penetrate into the building with the shadow of the cut grain silo. Lighting always plays an important role in the design. It relates to 7 senses which affect our human's perception. Heatherwick describes the space as being "like a vaulted cathedral". Yes, it is! Those cathedrals always have a tall ceiling and allow the sunlight penetrate into it.  Now the space in the grain silo doesn't look boring and depress anymore because of the element of height, oval void, and the lighting. Now, the space is full of the atmosphere and sensation of elegant, holy, comfort, impressive, grandeur and etc. The sun never knew how great until it hit the side of the building by Louis Khan. It applies same to the interior.

As you can imagine, I use light freely:light for me is the fundamental basis of architecture. I compose with light...by Le Corbusier.

                                                                         Gallery 1

                                                                           Gallery 2

The gallery has divided into different height as well. The sensation in gallery 1 is different than gallery 2 as the gallery 1 is having double volume and enclosed by the wall without any window. It looks depressed and silences. The proportion in gallery 1 it emphasis the feeling, the mood for the art.

They applied the space within a space in the building as the oval void is enclosed by the gallery. It functions as a courtyard which gathers everyone together because they can view from different levels.

                                                       View from lower ground level.

The gap between each grain silos and the void for the corridor
( which can view to the oval void).

I believe that the way people live can be directed a little bit by architecture by Tadao Ando. This quote strongly expresses that architecture does influence those people who are using the building even though only a little bit. As architecture is design for human it is important that we follow the guideline. It is not about playing safe but to design it according to the guideline for people to create the most suitable surrounding, proportion, and organization, sensation according to the needs of people. Architect solves problems for people not creating problems to them.
