  ORGANISATION & PROPORTION

  ORGANISATION

Organisation is to determine the seperation and connection between similar or dissimilar uses, and helps to clarify aspects of use and establishes similarity or contrast between spaces. For Andrea Palladio , proportion can refer to mathematical factor and it is served in symmetry ; For Le Corbusier , proportion is about feeling , only one who has been in the specific space can judge the proportion of it .

  PROPORTION

Proportion is the relationship between parts or things. In particular harmonious, proper or desirable relationship and the balance of symmetry. Andrea Palladio suggests more on symmetrical and balanced, Le Corbusier suggests more on lifestyle stand point. For me, this is more personal.

In other words, adaquate proportion makes a space planned to its function and importance among the others, while organisation is the arrangement of those spaces according to their relevance under certain principles. Different proportion of volume of space creates different aproach and feelings towards the space in terms of privacy, heirarchy, function and emotion. In a typical Early Christian church, proportion of building is use to express the sacred and almighty of God or religion. The religious buildings are way more larger in scale than normal housing, double volume or even bigger volume space is often used in religious architecture to express the grand and huge of God infront of human, with the use of large scale it also create a feeling of respect towards the mighter beings, just like the natural law in the woods.
In functionality wise, the huge volume space can contain more population and allows more activity to happen, especially the atrium, nave and berma in Early Christian church. In contrast, the other spaces will have smaller porportion of space where they did not need to express publicity and mightiness, carry lesser or more specific function with the need of privacy. All these spaces is then composed into an organisation, either in linear, radial, clustered or interlocked. The arrangement of the spaces is organised by the sequence of function, level of relevance between each of the spaces, and also specific needs by the requirements.

library main atrium
The use of multiple level spaces sharing the huge void in the main atrium / public reading area creates a sense of deepness and wideness of knowledge in the collection of the library. The open skylight from the rooftop not only brighten up the whole area but also a level more increase the sense of huge volume to the space. Indeed, people feel respect and humble infront of these vastfull of knwoledege. In terms of function these kind of organisation make the findings of books and seat easier, arrangement and classification of books more efficient, and in this huge volume of public, users begins to behave more respect to the other readers as they might disturb the whole hall if they make noise.

reading room, level 1
Proceed to the reading room at level 1, the ceiling level sets down the volume of the space, which lower down the level of public and users here enjoy more privacy. The reading room and the atrium are glued adjacently where allows users to switch between quickly if they need.

auditorium

The auditorium proportion is smaller and more enclosed compare to the reading area, as the reading area is the heart of this building, the auditorium comes in second. To extend the visual volume of space, a huge opening with curtains are designed at the end of the performance stage.

The other spaces shares a smaller porpotion of space and is arranged to the side perimeter of the circular centralised organisation. The whole building is well planned with adaquate proportion and organisation for each of the space, all well conected and responses to each other. The differ between the proportion creates different senses of space that attract people to experience it, like what Le Corbusier said : " proportion provokes sensation "

The conclusion is, the use of proportion and organisation is to juxtapose elements in order, as To create architecture is to put in order. Put what in order? Function and objects " by Le Corbusier. Proportion and organisation plays an important rule in expressing the character of the space. It plays just like a human body, each of the organs and parts are organised according to relevance of functions with the right proportion.
