  Proportion & Organisation

Down the ages , architecture is served to provide a comfortable and suitable space for occupants with the process and product of planning , designing and constructing . By considering every factors and influences which might bring negative impact on the building , it needs some fundamental and useful system to whether support or enhance the reverberation of constructing a building . In order to accomplish the expected effect , for my opinion , especially in contemporary architecture , both of the proportion and organisation are badly needed and interrelated .

First of all , in differentiating proportion and organisation , we know that they are two different but relating element .
Proportion is use of ratio to adjust and decide the volume or dimension of a space by considering the human anthropometry as a purpose . For Andrea Palladio , proportion can refer to mathematical factor and it is served in symmetry ; For Le Corbusier , proportion is about feeling , only one who has been in the specific space can judge the proportion of it . In any case , it serves as an important role in enhancing the space usage .
Organisation is kind of space planning depends on the functions between specific spaces . It considers the connection and arrangement between spaces in order to provide the most functional interrelation . In other word , it enhances the circulation within a building by connecting two interacting space to provide convenient to the occupants . For examples , the relationship between bathroom and bedroom .
By far , are proportion and organisation necessary for human inhabitation and functioning ? For me , absolutely yes . " To create architecture is to put in order. Put what in order? Function and objects " by Le Corbusier , as what he mentioned , lead into the question , proportion and organisation can be considered as the functional objects .
As far as I am concerned , they can be considered as compositional strategies of drawing and design . Drawing derived from the proportion and organisation , proportion and organisation derived from the design and design derived from the consequence of correlation factors . In a word , they are interconnected .

Case study

VitraHaus by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron

VirtraHaus is a multi-layered structure . It is a five-storey building consists of stacked volumes with pitched roofs covered in charcoal stucco . Each end is glazed and shoots outwards up to 16 feet ( 5 meters ) , creating the impression of a pile of houses .

The conceptual drawing of VirtraHaus obviously shows the interrelation between five houses . In stead of designing a direct visual volume , the architects play with the interlocking factor to maximize the visual effect . The concept connects two themes that appear repeatedly in the oeuvre of Herzog & de Meuron : the theme of the archetypal house and the theme of stacked volumes  .

The project meets all the needs of today's Hungarian independent ( family ) houses. The largest central space is the living room . The kitchen as an open cube and a separate entity stands on one side . Almost the whole storeys and the most beautiful part of the garden can be seen from this point . Residential area is interrelating with the surrounding environment . From the bottom of the steel plate , a single handrail stairs can reach the first storey . The bedroom and the corresponding service space can be reached by the corridor . The child's room has a glass wall facing the corridor , ensuring a visual connection with the living area . The parents' bedroom is completely isolated . Every spaces are well organized .

From this scene , we can see how the staircase connecting the spaces .

Due to the proportions and dimensions of the interior spaces – the architects use the term ' domestic scale ' – the showrooms are reminiscent of familiar residential settings . The individual ' houses ' , which have the general characteristics of a display space , are conceived as abstract elements .

As Le Corbusier said " proportion provokes sensation " , all spaces are designed by proportion as the corridors and staircases being used .
