Building and Body - Chin Yi Hong 1001542729

The relationship between building and body is interrelated from long ago . I believe that human body is designed with good reasons and so a building should be well-designed depends on the human anthropometry to provide comfort as Marcus Virtuvius said "Therefore, since nature has designed the human body so that its members are duly proportioned to the frame as a whole, it appears that the ancients had good reason for their rule, that in perfect buildings the different members must be in exact symmetrical relations to the whole general scheme ." By considering the anthropometry derived from the human body , some of the buildings will directly use the body shape or the body movement as an inspiration to design the building shape .

As my opinion , a building can be metaphors , abstractions or direct responses to the body . A building can be a metaphor of a body that it functions with the human anthropometry within itself just like human body . A building can be considered as an abstraction of a body because it is influenced and it can be inspired by the shape or form of the body depends on its motion or proportion . And next , a building is sure a direct response to the body due to its reaction to the human anthropometry or Proportioning Grid .

Next , there is a case study to show a building being inspired and abstracted by human body .

Absolute Towers - MAD architects

Absolute Towers is a pair of curvaceous twisted skyscrapers in the growing city of Mississauga, Canada . It is comprised of two towers that ‘dance’ in a sinuous jig as they rise to claim a spot in the Mississauga skyline.

Actress - Marilyn Monroe

" The concept of the tower at the beginning was very simple , " said MAD founder Ma Yansong . " We just wanted to make something organic but different , more natural and more soft and not something too strong that would remind people of money or power . "

The organic forms are simple and delightful – easy on the eye . It is fondly dubbed the Marylyn Monroe towers depends on its woman body movement design . The Absolute Towers parallel  the twisting fluidity or natural lines found in life which not to emphasize vertical lines. Instead, the design features a smooth, unbroken balcony that wraps each floor of the building .
