A JOURNEY OVERSEAS

Samuel Wong, a local grauduated (UTM) architect who is searching a chance to challenge overseas, finally get his opportunity when he visited Shanghai Expo, 2010, with his luggage and portfolio to Aedas Shanghai and then Hangzhou, and today he return to share his personal experince to the public.

Samuel begin his talk with a brief city developing history of China, he talk about Deng Xiao Ping, the father of modernisation of China, a person who is very desperate to develop China in great speed.

Then he introduced the site, Hangzhou, which is a city of scenery with many popular Entrepreneur companies. Many new buildings were completed in these years including Hangzhou Grand Theatre and International Conference Hall. The project he involved is the Raffles City Twin Tower, by architect Ben van Berkel.

This project is a complex with permanent accommodation, temporary accommodation, commercial area and entertainment area.

DESIGN THOUGHTS

CIRCULATION

One of the important considerations of this project is the circulation, the project team try to make a focal point out of three different nodes, and figure out how to connect them with the building.

The landscape is zoned as four spatial experiences, extending from the site periphery to the inner court. The main landscape circulation originated from the four corner nodes. The west and east nodes spiral downward into the exterior sunken plazas, while the north and south nodes flow into the structural ribbons of the inner atrium.

TOWER DEVELOPMENT

The surrounding green axis is connected through the courtyard towards the tower landscape facade. This creates a twisting effect of the tower as the urban facade faces the green axis and the river (Qiantang River). The east-west orientation of the towers also minimises overshadowing while maximising daylight for the residences and offices. Samuel also say that the oreintation of the rooftop is to let the endusers have a great view to the Qiantang River.

FACADE ARTICULATION

Both towers consist of facade with vertical fins, and a ‘landscape facade’ with horizontal planters. The programme of the building determine the depth, width, orientation and angle of the facade panels. This maximises the openings with an optimal window-to-wall ratio.

FACADE TILES

The shimmering scale-like skin of aluminum tiles offer pixelated perspectives. The towers are featured by an outer layer of rotated, vertical solar shading fins, placed on top of the curtain wall system to compliment the tower’s characteristic twist, they also frame internal views.

SUSTAINABILITY

The using of natural ventilation, solar gain and daylighting principles govern by the local context, efficient structure and the method in which materials are employed all work in agreement with one another to lower the energy and material demands of the building. Raffles City Hangzhou is the first retail mall in China to use natural ventilation on a large scale and has achieved Gold LEED certification.

This brings to an end of the Raffles City Twin Tower. In this project Samuel told us the enviroment of working there was very competitive, the co-workers there is very more determined and hardworking than he imagined, this project take a long time to complete due to a delay. As his experience, he spent 7 years in this project, some of his team members spent 10+ years in it. He feel grateful to have such a chance to involve in this large sacle project as this is like a " once a lifetime " event.

Q&A

Q1: Is this project considered as a high speed development in China?
A1: I dont think so because this project had paused for a peroid of time, what I think is considerd as fast is a Jusco size project is completed whithin 18 months from land purchase to the completion of the building.

Q2: Do you encourage students to study overseas or graduated to intern overseas?
A2: Is is very differnet when u start to open up ur eyes in other countries, it will be tougher but it is always a good chance to learn more, thats why I keep applying to go overseas.

Q3: What should we prepare or learn in advance when intended to go overseas?
A3: " Rhino " is a program that is widely used in China industry, if China, " Rhino " will be the one u need to handle advance.
