Building with Human Body (Ng Shi Qi 1001542350)

Human body does have an important relationship with building as we human are the user of the building. We have to deeply understand and analyze human body. We design a building according to human proportion so human body does interact with each other. Once we understand the proportion, it will be easy to design. From the past, we always trying to understand human body more and more. The Vitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci, le Corbusier invested the modular man which using French man dimension as a reference. The modular man has easy our task as it in different activities with dimension. Although the dimension is larger than Asian but as he said it is better that a measure should be too large than too small so it can fit for different height of a human.  Einstein said it is a scale of proportions which makes the bad difficult and the good easy. With a proper human proportion, we can clearly design for different activity.

Nowadays, architect more or less still using human body to design as the concept of the building. We always find our inspiration and ideas from surrounding to give the building a soul. For this purpose, we have to understand how it works. We can’t deny that we do use human body as concept directly or indirect.

To me, a building is direct to a human body as we have a heart to be alive a building as well. A heart to make a building alive. The vein in our body which is alike circulation in a building and how it makes the space flue. Our bone is alike the structure holding the building. A skin to us and also building. Hair as the rooftop to protect us from the sun and rain.  Instead of metaphor or abstraction, direct response is closer to the idea of the building for me. Not describing, abstracting the body to the building, but a system work like a human body how the function. It is an interesting and challenge to create it to make them work and to be unit.

Human body always relates to fashion as the curving lines etc. The case study I would like to show is a new headquarters of international fashion group Xinhee by MAD Architects. The building is inspired by the human body. The building is clearly distinguishable internal skeleton and external skin.

The 61,000-square-meter structure will feature a central atrium from which six petals emerge, creating a "star-shaped layout that formalizes a solid 'bone' structure frame." MAD founder Ma Yansong said the design explores the correspondence between clothing and architecture. "We envision it as a building with skin and bones," he added.

The building will feature office spaces mixed with vertical gardens, veiled by a translucent layer of PTFE plastic, which symbolizes the skin and gives the building an elegant, floating appearance. The six wings will house each of the six subsidiary brands of Xinhee, while the central atrium will serve as a meeting place that is open to the public. The atrium also includes a footbridge, which doubles as a runway for fashion shows. ( From the website)

To me, this building is special as they combine the idea of clothing with architecture and human body. The facade looks like a spiral backbone. Backbone function as support our body while the designer using this idea to emphasize the bone support the building. The exterior skin act as a clothing or skin to protect the bone. The designer modifies the bone with slightly rotation to show the curve cloth. They manupulate the backbone into a star shape.
