Onion House , 2016
As it look simple as it may appear , I do put in a lot of thought in designing this villa . The name i gave for this villa is the Onion house , which the inspiration from onion , of course . Yes , onions as in the onion that you would cut every meal to make the food taste better . That onion is something that i want to express in every aspect of life that we are going through . We may look fine on the appearance but on the inside we gone through a lot and obviously we gone through sorrow moment , an expression hyperbola for the onion . When we cut open the onion , turns out making everyone who in touch with it will obviously shed tears .
This is the working space for the botanist that i mentioned . As it looks complex as it seems , the design behind it is just simplified . As what i understand , simplicity define as emphasizing the needs and primary function needed within a building . For example , the tree in the centre of the spaces is the hierachy and contributes most of the bench work . The complexity take places when the an object that wrap the tree which is so much of simplicity but with the repetition , it become bench with different level for user to imply his job . "A building is simple not because its shape comform to elementary geometry , not because all of its immediately visible , or the logic is evident on its connection , but because all its parts voice their necessity ." said by Vittorio Gregotti .We implied the necessity of object in the spaces like the workbench so that the botanist don't have to bend or squat for instance to do his work comfortably . Cutting off any unnecessary object . Back to the tree in the middle , what's the purpose the tree is there ? For my reasoning , it serve as a 'atap' that will provide shades even though the spaces is fully covered but it is all geometry transparent glass . Other than that , the window that is designed also take place in complexity from the outside , but simplicity may observed from the inside .
The interior of the working space has a lot elevated spaces , which gives a lift to access a higher ground . This is because for the tree at the center has the growth expansion to a very high area . In order for the user - botanist to work , he must reach the high ground without using the ladder , which is very dangerous and unconvenient at the same time . Thus , i create 3 different height of spaces for the user to undergo his work in high ground for the branches or the leaf , mid level for the trunk and the low ground which access to the root . Vittorio Greggoti said :

To free oneself from the superfluous; that is, to identify what is superfluous without confusing it with the richness of curiosity, of a question, of questioning, requires an accurate and difficult effort toward discrimination, even though solely liberating oneself from the superfluous clearly does not guarantee access to the heart of simplicity. "
As for the overall building , the shapes has become an exploded onion , a cut onion , a peeled onion . As the thought of it , i want the user - Botanist to feel the home is actually home where you can take chill and work at the same time . As for the hyperbola i mentioned above , i want the user to feel that even though going through a tough moment , but you don't have to be emotional in a fixed place , but can always spread out in the house . For that , both of this area is combined to create the surrounding for the user to run his daily life as working life and daily life has turn to one . What i did was places the working spaces at the second floor to form a barrier to avoid guest to enter without permission . With that , the house has already split into two zone , which is the private zone and the public zone . It form a simple reasoning but yet the complexity has already takes place by the end product .

In this design , we are assigned to create a specific working place which may fit the user's job . The user that i was assigned is a botanist which leads to one of my reason choosing the onion as inspiration . Botanist is indeed a hard job and their working spaces have to be fit to place all his equipment and possible inventory in that specific spaces . The thought that put in the spaces is that it must have the the simplest design but with a complex functionality in every detailing of designing spaces .
