SIMPLICITY IN MY PERCEPTION

Simplicity is as a process of adhering to the essence of use, to lack of ornament, and to mimesis of the technical reproducibility and expressive rigor of utensils. Which means that every single element used in the design, has to be essential and related in a same language that they end up as a union, nothing much can be added nor noting less can be taken. I would like to use my semester 3 final project to illustrate the simplicity in architecture, which is an art gallery located at Seksyen 7, Shah Alam.

In this design, what I wanted to express in a whole is communication. The main intention that I tackle is to make non art and art people closer, elder generations with younger generations closer, and different type of art closer. With these consideration I had include two different spaces to achieve and to solve the problems.

The space where I painted blue, was the common preparation space for the three exhibition hall and also act as a service lane for the cafe. This space is designed to create a chance for different art person or any exhibitors to come along each other and discuss about their perception of art, or what they do, communicating and exchanging information and knowledge they had. The space was just a simple loading area for the exhibitions, covered with roof to create a comfortable space for the user to communicate to each other.

COMMON PREPARATION SPACE

The overall appearance of this space is just clean and neat, trying to emphasis on the person and activity happening here, in contrast to the exhibition space, it is an intention like a backlane of a row of shophouses, which can be noticed at the surrounding of our site, which functions same as a preparation space or loading space.

At the end of the lane there is a service folding door for the cafe. The human figure standing there is a glass curtain wall which allows visitor to observe how the arts are being prepared, and how the exhibition is running. The aim behind this is to weaken the partition between art person and non art person. There are too less deep understanding towards art at the moment and often people judge about art with the commercial value of it, without knowing the story, intention, thoughts or any background of a particular art. The solution I suggest is just to simply let the vision of the visitors pierce through the wall and directly look into what is behind the scene.

Regarding the communication between generations, the space I design is a semi outdoor shelter area, which allows people from different age and background to come together and have a chance to try out different art materials.
The space where it is coloured in orange is a semi outdoor creative area with a counter for art materials, indoor sitting area, outdoor drawing area and panels for users to freely pin up their creation to express themselves. The space was designed in a semi outdoor way to make it ease to access and can see what happening inside as a way of attraction and communication. The sitting area provides a rest place for adults with kids if they wish to wait for their kid playing around with art material. There is no any restrictions nor borderlines for any age to enter and come across indoor and outdoor area. This is to promote the elder generations to sit down and listen or watch how the youngers express themselves and telling stories about, or vice versa.

CREATIVE AREA

The main intention to this space is to blur out the indoor outdoor, as well as blur the boundaries between generations.

To wrap it up, what i wanted to do is to express something directly at the same time every element serve for purpose. As the words from Vittorio Gregotti,
logic is evident in its connections, because all its parts voices their necessity.
