Whether it is place-based or placelessness , let us unravel the understanding of P L A C E . . . .


P L A C E , A RICH AND DIVERSE ENTITY OF ARCHITECTURE TERM . PLACE IS WHERE DIMENSION FORMED BY HUMAN'S RELATIONSHIP WITH PHYSICAL SETTING , MEANINGS " PLACE ATTACHMENT " , WHICH WE REFER TO THE BONDING OF THE HUMAN TO THE AREA . HOW DO WE FEELS , HOW WE VALUE IT , HOW WE SENSES THE AREA, ARE VERY MUCH ACCOUNTED FOR THE ELEMENTS OF PLACE .

THERE'S TIME WHERE PEOPLE WILL HAVE A MISCONCEPTION SPACE AND PLACE. ALTHOUGH THIS TWO TERMS COEXISTED FOR A VERY LONG TIME , CLOSELY RELATED BUT HAVE VERY DIFFERENT MEANING . SPACE IS CREATED TO SERVE A FUNCTION , A REASON TO BE CREATED . HOW DOES IT DIFFER IS THAT , WITHOUT ELEMENTS OF BONDING , FEELING , IT CANNOT BE CALLED P L A C E



PHENOMENOLOGY

NOW , WE ALREADY HAVE CLUE OF PLACE , NOW WE GOING TO RELATE PHENOMENOLOGY WITH PLACE . PHENOMENOLOGY IS ABOUT EXPERIENCE , AWARENESS AND SENSIBILITY OF HUMAN WHILE BEING IN A SPECIFIC PLACE . "PLACE" IS COSELY CONNECTED TO HUMAN INTERACTION AND ACTIVITIES , IT EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF SENSES WITHIN AN AREA ON LIKE HOW THE WIND FLOW OR SHADING DEVICES WILL BRING , HOW THE TEXTURE OF MATERIALS BEEN USED WILL BRING AESTHETIC EFFECT ETC .

HENCE , AS WE COMBINED THIS TWO , PHENOMENOLOGY OF PLACE , DEFINED AS A SENSE OF A PLACE , REACT TO THE SITE CONDITION . IT IS ABOUT THE FEELING DEPENDS ON HUMAN LIFESTYLE WITH EVERY POSSIBLE OF ELEMENTS WITHIN AREA . IT INCLUDES THE NATURAL AND MAN-MADE ENVIRONMENT SUCH AS TREE OR BUILDINGS , AND ALSO NATURE PHENOMENOLOGY SUCH AS DAY AND NIGHT . IT ALSO INCLUDES THE LIGHT , THE SOUND , THE WIND , THE HUMAN ACTIVITIES OR ANY ELEMENT RELATED TO HUMAN SENSIBILITY .

FOR THAT , I WOULD LIKE TO BRING IN MY PREVIOUS SEMESTER ( SEMESTER 3 ) PROJECT TO HAVE A QUICK CRITICISM ON THE TOPIC OF "PHENOMENOLOGY OF PLACE " . OUR DESIGN IS TO CREATE AN ART STATION IN A GIVEN LOCATION , WHICH IS LOCATED IN SHAH ALAM , LAMAN SENI AREA . THE ART STATION ( THE RED HIGHLIGHTED AREA ) , WILL BE A PLACE FOR PEOPLE GATHER TO APPRECIATE THE ART , DISPLAY THEIR SKILLS , AND CREATE A UNCOMMON ELEMENT IN THE AREA , AT THE SAME TIME , BLEND WITH THE LOCATION . THIS IS WHERE PHENOMENOLOGY WILL TAKE PART IN DESIGN .

  To dwell means to belong to a given space” - BY CHRISTIAN NORBURG-SHULZTHIS STATEMENT ARE EXCELLENTLY PUT , I STRONGLY AGREE ON IT , WHICH SPACE IS NOT JUST SPACE , NOT JUST A REASON FOR FUNCTIONALITY , BUT PROVIDING A FEELS , AN APPRECIATION IS THE KEY OF MAKING A GOOD PLACE . SPACES OR PLACES , EITHER ONE , NEED A COMMON ELEMENT WHICH IS HUMAN ( A LIVING PERSON ) . E.RALPH said :

FOR THIS , I RELATE IT TO PLACE-BASED DESIGN , WHICH I STRONGLY CONSIDER THE MATERIALITY , THE CULTURE , THE COMMUNITY , PATTERN , OBJECT, THE SURROUNDING IN DESIGNING . A PLACE , WILL HAVE ITS EXISTING IDENTITY WHICH MAKE THE PLACE , A PLACE , WHICH WE WILL HAVE TO IDENTIFY BEFOREHAND . THE SHAH ALAM LAMAN SENI IS CONSIDERABLY AN ARTISTIC PLACE , WHERE PEOPLE AROUND MALAYSIA , WOULD COME TO DISPLAY HIS/HER SKILLS .

  IN ORDER TO DESIGN ART STATION , WE HAVE TO KNOW THE LOCAL PERSPECTIVE , WHY PEOPLE WOULD COME TO SEE THE INSTALLATION , WALL ART DESIGNED , WHY SHOULD THEY GO TO YOUR ART STATION INSTEAD OF APPRECIATE THEIRS . FOR THAT , WE HAVE TO BLEND IN , FINDING THE ELEMENTS , CREATING A BUILDING ( ART STATION ) THAT WOULD SIT AT THE PLACE WITHOUT BREAKING THE EXISTING MEMORY OR THOUGHT OF PEOPLE ON THE PLACE





THE PROPOSED ART STATION I DESIGNED CONSIDERED THE MATERIALITY , WIDELY USING CONCRETE AND TIMBER WHICH IS RAW MATERIAL IN THE CONSTRUCTION . BASED ON THE ANALYSIS THAT WE GOT DURING ANALYSIS STAGE , WE FIND THAT , CONCRETE AND TIMBER HAS THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE WITHIN THE PLACE . WE DO NOT WANT THAT SENSE OF MATERIALITY EXISTING IN THE AREA TO DIMINISH , KEEPING THE GENIUS LOCI INTACT WHEN WE DESIGN A BUILDING . 







TO BEGIN WITH , THE "PLACE" IS AN ARTISTIC PLACE . WE DESIGN ACCORDING TO THE SENSE OF PLACE . I WANT PEOPLE TO TREAT IT AS ITS OWN PLACE , A PLACE WHERE THEY DO NOT LOST THE FEEL OF ARTISTIC PLACE .

STUDIO - IN RESPONSE OF LOCAL NEEDS , I DESIGNED THE STUDIO NEXT TO THE WALKWAY WILL BE THE PLACE , FOR ANY ARTIST VISIT TO AMEND , FINALIZE OR ANYTHING TO DO WITH THEIR INSTALLATION SO FORTH .

LIBRARY - IN RESPONSE OF LOCAL NEEDS , WILL BE PLACE , FOR PUBLIC OR NEWCOMER WHO WOULD LIKE TO LEARN THE FUNDAMENTAL OF ART , OR MAYBE WOULD LIKE TO RESEARCH MORE OF THE ARTWORK , THIS IS THE PLACE FOR THEM TO LOOK FOR . 

EXHIBITION HALL - SEPARATING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR,GIVING DIFFERENT SENSE TO THE HUMAN IN A SPACE , A PLACE TO DISPLAY ART , ARTWORK , INSTALLATION OF KIND .

EXTERIOR EXHIBITION - A PLACE TO DISPLAY ARTWORK THAT NEEDS THE PLAY OF DAY AND NIGHT TO DISPLAY ITS POTENTIAL

SURAU - WE ANALYSED THAT WITHIN THE AREA , THERE'S IS A MOSQUE WHICH IN A WAY , THE POSSIBILITY OF MUSLIM CUSTOMER .



AS FOR THE SITE SPACE , WE WERE TO DESIGN A PARK ADJACENT TO THE BUILDING ( ART STATION ) . I DO CATEGORIZED MY DESIGN AS PLACE-BASED DESIGN , AS ALL MY CREATION IS BASED ON SURROUNDING AND EXISTING PLACE

THE PARK I DESIGNED , I EMPHASIZES ON THE TREES PLANTATION ( NOT ANY TREE , BUT MUST BE TREE THAT EXISTED IN THE PLACE ) . BEFORE DESIGNING , I OBSERVED THE PLANTATION THAT REMAINS IN THE "PLACE" , WHICH IS LEUCAENA TREE AND SWEETBAY MAGNOLIA TREE . AS CHRISTIAN NORBURG-SHULZ SAID : " Our everyday life-world consists of concrete “phenomena.” It consists of people, of animals, of flowers, trees and forests, of stone, earth, wood and water, of towns, streets and houses, doors, windows and furniture. "
SMALLEST DETAIL ARE PUT IN THOUGHT . 


THESE TREES ARE THE MAIN ROLE TO KEEP THE PLACE COOL , REDUCE HEAT , MAINTAINING THE SENSE OF COMFORT WITHIN A PLACE . THERE IN ORDER FOR THAT , I PLANT SOME OF THESE TREE INTO THE PARK .



NOT LOSING THE QUALITY OF THE ARTISTIC PLACE , WE WERE TO DESIGN A DUST BIN HOLDER  WHICH RELATE TO THE BUILDING AND SITE . SO I CREATE AN ARTISTIC DUST BIN THAT , IN A WAY , HUMAN ABLE TO APPRECIATE IT AS AN ARTWORK ALSO A FUNCTION TO STORE DUST BIN. THE DUST BIN HOLDER PLACED AROUND THE PARK , WHICH IS ABLE TO BLEND IN WITH THE CONCEPT OF THIS ART STATION . THE DUST BIN HOLDER ALSO INCREASE THE SENSE OF ARTISTIC WHEN PEOPLE WALK AROUND THE STREET .




TO ME , PLACE-BASED DESIGN IN ARCHITECTURE TODAY VERY ESSENTIAL THAT WE DESIGN A BUILDING BASED ON ITS CULTURE , ENVIRONMENT AND CONTEXT . THOUGH PLACE-BASED DESIGN , IT WILL DETERMINE AN "ENVIRONMENT CHARACTER " AND IT GIVEN SUCH A CHARACTER OR " ATMOSPHERE" . IT GIVE A FEELING OF A CERTAIN PLACE AND A NATURAL EXPERIENCE TO MAN AND ITS MAKE A SUITABLE AND COMFORT SPACE FOR THEM .DESIGNING A BUILDING BASED ON A "PLACE" , IT WILL GIVE A SYMBOL TO THE BUILDING AND TO REPRESENT THE CULTURE , ENVIRONMENT AND IDENTITY OF THE BUIILDING . A PLACE WILL EFFECT HUMAN'S ACTIVITY AND INTERACTION THAT ARCHITECTURE TODAY TRYING TO DESIGN AND VISUALIZE THE GENIUS LOCI , AND THE TASK TO CREATE A MEMORABLE PLACES , WHEREBY HE HELPS MAN TO DWELL .
