Phenomenology (Ng Shi Qi 1001542350)

Christian Norburg-Shulz said place is evidently an integral part existence. It's not just surrounding affection, but a unity of texture, color, object, a pattern of shape. It's about the totality of the place.

Sensibility- lighting, and shadow.

Phenomenology means it can be understood as an aspect of philosophy researching into the experience of built space, and as shorthand for architectural phenomenology, a historical architectural movement. In short, it is experience and sensibility to us. For example, experience space, narrative, emotion, ideological, genius loci, sense of places, spontaneity, interaction etc. Furthermore, sensibility is about human sense. In other words, it is the lighting, shadow, material, view etc. How the lighting penetrates the space, the amount/ control of lighting, how the shadow cast, type of material and others.

Genius loci refer to location's distinctive atmosphere, or a "spirit of place", rather than necessarily a guardian spirit. With genius Loci, it makes the place different than other, makes it so special, outstanding.

Space and place. Another term for the place. We create a space in a place. We design a space with expression, sense, concept, and others. We are making a space to become meaningful by adding the phenomenology of the place as they interact each other. It is important for us to clarify the relationship between space and place.

Red- site, yellow- roundabout.

I would like to use my design project as the case study for this topic as the site is in Jalan Sungai Besi, Malaysia. The site is surrounded by old building. It used to be Chinese area due to mining but now it is in development. The building was built during world war II as to protect them from the war, the wall of the building is thick. How we gonna maintain the character and yet not out of phase?

The new program for the building will be design center as the site is still in developing. Moreover, there are few abandon old building around. It will be a waste by leaving them there. The design center will be holding project or competition such as every 3 months for renovation or adaptive reuse. To help the process of developing and yet maintain age of the place. Not only this, the design center can provide suggestion to surrounding for renovation or adaptive reuse. The design center will collect the recycled material and reuse them. By this, the awareness in society can be raised.

Villa at Sengokubara by Shigeru Ban inspired me about the form of the circle and application of it.

Sketch for the circle.

Circle bridge( public access) with existing structure.

Plan

I decided to add a circular courtyard in the middle of the building. As there are 3 spiral staircases in the original courtyard. For the original building, people have to access from the entrance and into the courtyard and only by this they can go upstairs. With this point, I would like to stronger the meaning and function of the courtyard as in the past, it is the place where everyone gathered, the kids run around in it, parents chatting beside, old people drinking tea or playing chess. A courtyard to closer relationship between people, stronger the bond between each other.

First at all, I used the plan of the building to decide the radius of the circle and then I moved the circle below so the spiral staircase can begirdle by the circle. Why circle? Why not square or hexagon? I would like to describe the original square building as people coming from everywhere as the building is surrounded by primary road even secondary road and a circle to GATHER them together.

Another reason that I'm using a circle is because there's a roundabout( which hidden below the flyover) near to the site which is from my project 2. I would like to bring the roundabout into my building.

Zeitz MOCAA art gallery- how the lighting penetrates into the space and the volume of space.

Sketch for courtyard.

There will be another layer of structure on top of the courtyard with plant( roundabout cover by the flyover). The purpose of the structure is to minimize the sunlight yet cooling down the temperature during the afternoon as Malaysia is a tropical country and provide greenery.

Brown column as existing column, white column as a new structure.

The original structure cannot be demolished so I added on another new structure into the building which is for the circle courtyard. A frame interlock with another frame. Furthermore, it will be using different material from the original structure which is concrete. The new structure will be I- beam. By this, the material of structure is in contrast. There will be a new round public access, bridge on the first floor and second floor which project out from the courtyard( the circulation besides the roundabout). The purpose of the bridge is to connect the space together as ...

The original building is surrounded by old building few on the left side are even abandon. I decided to rotate the plan on the first floor and the second floor to maximize the view of the courtyard and control the view to surrounding as for the original building few opening were blocked.

Multi-family home in Southern Vietnam by Nishizawa Architects- the expression of the material and free plan.

Materiality

The materials of the building are brick, timber to show the ages, essence of the building and site yet adding on modern material which is steel such as I beam, curtain wall to bring in a modern element.

Sketch for leveling.

Different leveling as the buildings on the site is having different height and the element of the flyover crossing each other. Leveling according to the anthropometry. Different leveling will be applied on the courtyard as well so the visitor can use it according to their like and for events.

Model with roof design- allow sunlight to penetrate into the building on top of the circle.

It is necessary to apply phenomenology in design as it makes the building match to the place and meaningful. It is a guideline to follow but not as a rule. But, at the same time, it might bind us to design and our creativity. "The cage of routine binds( the individual) so closely that it is almost impossible for him to stumble into an inventive act: he is like a tightrope walker whom vast forces so bind to the cable that he cannot fall, even if he wishes, into the unknown." by Norman Bryson, looking at the Overlooked: Four essays on still Life Painting (London: Reakiton Books, 1990). No venture no gain. As we might put too much of attention on phenomenology( place) and abandon the requirement, the problems people facing. We shall apply more visualize, dramatic experience even perception if necessary to make it interesting as Kathryn Moore said" stepping outside our culture." Thinking out of the box.  Meanwhile, it doesn't mean we are going to abandon the phenomenology or genius loci away but keep the good and throw away the bad.
