Form & Function - Chin Yi Hong 1001542729

Louis Sullivan claimed that " Form follows Function " , as my opinion , it might be used in the initial design of a building but not for the lifespan of an architectural work . A form or a function might be changed due to the environmental impact or human activities or other reasons which influence the initial purpose of the building . However , the function of the building is much easier to be changed compared to the form of the building . Hence , the form will be remained to adapt the new function or in reverse the new function will adapt the initial form as Adrian Forty said " the unflinching adaptation of a building to its position and use gives, as a sure product of that adaptation, character and expression. " The relationship between form and function for Louis Sullivan is a dialectical relation , the metaphysical and the material , the infinite and finite , life and death . They are antagonistic but yet united too . For me , they are united and coequal like bees and flowers , parasites and saprophytes , life and breath . As what Frank Llyod Wright argued about " Form and Function are one " , the building without function will not have a purposeful form . The function changes and the form changes . It might not be the initial form but at least the visible or partial design of the building . Sometimes , form and function will both be remained . The only things changed may be just the use of materials or space planning .

In contemporary architecture , the techniques of development improved and the aesthetic ideas of people changed hence the value in use of a building will not be constant . " Unceasingly the essence of things is taking shape in the matter of things, and this unspeakable process we call birth and growth " by Louis Sullivan , people keep on renovating those buildings which have lost their initial values and endow it a new value . For example , A Famosa which used to be a Portuguese fortress , nowadays has become a historical site and famous scenic spot . It has remained the form but the function has totally been changed . Back on the point , renovation and adaptive reuse affect how building are both designed initially and transformed later . The renovation or reuse is needed when a building has lost its value . Thus , the building will be given a new function or new form by changing its zoning , value in use or aesthetic design to adapt its renovation . In some detail , the space planning within the building as how the partition wall being reconstructed or the facade of the building changed in color or the openings such as windows being sealed up . In addition , as the time passing , the renovation will be eliminated from the new era . Thus , the new renovation will be decided again to replace the previous one . The transformation will be affected by the current renovated form and function . Since the initial design had been changed many times , the initial purpose of the building will not be remained anymore . There will be additional designs and purposes utilized . That's why form will not follow function constantly .

Case Study

Kyung Hee Cyber University

From the architect. This peculiar project is akin to the re-telling of a story, or the re-making of an old B movie.  It is as much about architectural language as it is about the creativeness that follows the life-story of the “situational condition” of the site and building.

Neither a preservation project, nor a classicism creation, the renovation of the main volume “distills” the formal architectural language.  The existing building’s classical order was “purified” and the proper “order” of columns re-established, achieving in the volumetric vertically of the major structural bays, which houses academic office and research labs.  A former secondary eave line was re-inforced to become the major entablature of the new façade, achieving a balance that was missing.

Kyung Hee Cyber University has remained both of the form and function of the building . It changed the aesthetic design of the facade and rearranged the space . The facade has been designed to merge into the aesthetic idea of contemporary architecture .
