Form and Function (Ng Shi Qi 1001542350)

As the father of skyscraper Louis Sullivan said:" form follow function.". When a function is changing, the form will be changing as well to suit the function. But are we too focusing on the function and abandoning form. From Ole Scheeren Ted's Talk, he said Form follows fiction which is doing how we wanna live our life, how we script our own stories and others.

It doesn't matter about form or function as we are living in an era which is no boundary line for those. There's only blur zone for those architecture guidelines as we are picking up the advantages of each guideline and merge them.

Form is a shape, visual appearance or configuration of a building while a function is a guideline to design a form. However, what is the relationship between them over the lifespan of an architecture building? We design a form according to the function but what if when the function of it change, are we gonna demolish the form just because we gonna change the function? To my opinion, when we design a building, we shall not only design according to function but consider about the culture, local material and environmental. By this, when the function of the building change but the building still has its own value and it can accept a new function. Putting aside culture element, kilang bateri at Johor Bahru which it used to be a warehouse but now it becomes a commercial area as the society accepts industrial design.

                                                         Kyung Hee Cyber University

A renovation is changing a building function as well as the form. To specify, it is improving, making something new or bring back a building style. For example, Kyung Hee Cyber University ACAPeace Building which renovated by Chiasmus Partners in 2014. It was a 1980's reception hall and now it becomes a hybrid building. The existing building's classical order was 'purified' and the proper 'order' of columns re-established. The architect said this project is to retell a story or remaking something. It is an architectural language about creativeness that follows the life-story of the 'situation condition' of the site and building. After renovation, there's new element adds to the building and it won't be the same anymore.

                                                         Selkammer Heidelberg Castle

Conversely, adaptive reuse is maintaining the form but changing the function. For instance, Selkammer Heidelberg Castle by Max Dudler in 2017. It is a Renaissance building but now it becomes a visitor restaurant. This building maintains its own elevation and characteristics. By using adaptive reuse, the value and the essence of the age of the building are maintained. The only changing part is the function of the space and interior to fulfill the requirement of the new function.

Tiro al Blanco Art  Gallery/ Progresivo de Arquitectura in Mexico, 2016

It used to be an old hosiery factory in the Santa Tere neighborhood which was built in the decade over a big agricultural field with grid design. But now it becomes an art gallery. By this, the necessities of the gallery required have increased.

There are two requirements from the clients which are:

  • Organize the interior space refusing a rigid design, leaving a free developing of the gallery program at the insides and outsides, where the boundaries are unrestricted and inviting to a dynamism where the pieces of art and cultural objects place, it must be conceived as a place of conservation, diffusion, and research of arts created for the contemporary world.

  • Changing few of the existent architecture, the quality of the design is not measured just by the originality, and it is measure for the respectful integration.

Louis Sullivan said where a function does not change form does not change. What if the form can accept another new function itself? Then, there is no point to change the form as it is playing well with another function. From this case study, an old hosiery factory which becoming an art gallery and with the architecture design it even dynamic space and the art works.

How can a material object like a building impinge directly on human behavior? by Bill Hillier. As different material express different feeling and atmosphere. For example, the material of this building which are concrete, steel, and white plaster wall show a cool feeling to space as the exploded brick show its essence of age. The exterior of the building which is mostly in exploded brick is showing the essence of age while the concrete and steel which are modern materials showing that it used to be an old hosiery factory. The overall atmosphere of the exterior is totally different with the interior. As the interior is white, neat, and clean. The two different atmosphere is strongly contrasted.
