Form and Function - Leong Jiang Ling 1001436853

The lifespan building, like 100 years or 200 years, usually leave the form of it, to recognize how old is it. But this would only be the architect who likes the form that the building used to be.

In this case, the relationship between form and function over the lifespan of the building are tightly connected. Once the long lifespan building lost its form, it will deny the identity of this building and the experience it went through.

Just like Kilang Bateri, it is a factory originally, but changed into a factory that selling anything and became a place that operates as a shopping, dining and also serves as a place to hang out.

Above this case study, renovation is made through this building but the form of this building had still maintained. The architect of renovating this building designed initially and transformed by keeping its form and its function of this building but still, affect that building won't be like the building before.

As Louis Sullivan said, "Form follows function", where function does not change form does not change. We can't change function without changing the form while the form represents the building it self.

Before and after renovated

Kilang Bateri changed its form(just a little) by the architect or even demolished, it is reused for more function for every corner of it. Every corner has its function just like its interior.

From this form of the building, architect keeps its forms to fulfill the function to people and its interior. As Adrian Forty claimed "biology gave to the study of society was, in addition to the notions of "function" and of "hierarchy". The architect has to design the building by the biology of the human as the human is using the place, it is related human with space. "What classical convenance lacked, and what modern functionalism contains, is this notion that human society exists through its interaction with the physical and social surroundings.
